Duty Free Shopping:
Where most items are imported and are subject to high import taxes, the textile industry provide you with cheap branded textiles, normally rejected for exports, but still a bargain!
Beware of textile branded imitations such as Ralph Lauren, until December 2004, this was sold under the banner of a "Factory Shop" which were popping up like mushrooms all over the island. As of 1st January 2005 these articles are ONLY available "underground" at the major markets in Port Louis and Quatre Bornes and in some cases under the counter of exclusive textile shops.
If the police don't know where Ralph Lauren counterfeited textile is still being sold, then you can be sure ALL taxi drivers in Mauritius do, because they obtain a commission when they bring a tourist anywhere where money is spent. Actually the best thing to do is to let the Taxi drivers show you the good shopping spots, not buy anything that day, and then rent a car and do a days shopping which will work out cheaper than the taxi earning up to 20, 30 or even 40% on your back even if you have to rent a car for €25 per day it is worth it. It may be hard to take that line because taxi drivers in Mauritius can be so charming when money is round the corner! |
