Tariffs
for accommodation:
These vary from $10,00 a night, for a bed and breakfast in Mauritius (clean),
situated in Rose Hill in the center of the island, to the five star hotels where
I leave your imagination to fit your budget!
Tariffs
for Mauritius hotels in Mauritius:
If quoted to you directly, major hotels in Mauritius are generally more expensive
than if you went through your local travel agent in the country you reside. The
major Mauritius hotels have, generally, NO interest in dealing directly with the
public. They will quote you, but when you calculate, you will see that you are
better off taking a package with your local travel agent.
A hotel that
will deal directly with clients, and based in the heart of Perybère, is
the Côte d'Azur Hotel who
offer extremely competitive prices and the hotel is of excellent standing. They
class themselves as a 2 star hotel but in terms of cleanliness, hygiene and general
services I class them as a 3 star hotel, without all the additional services that
a 3 star hotel in Mauritius may provide.
Perybère has the most beautiful
beach in Mauritius. Perybère also offers a number of supermarkets for the
self catering tourism and just down the road, in 3 minute taxi ride, you have
in Grand Baie a hypermarket called SUPER U! There is a good night life at
walking distance and a dozen or more restaurants in Perybère; all reachable
in 5 minutes on foot. Talking about restaurants, rent
yoursef a car and take a drive down to Chamarel
Restaurant in south of Mauritius and enjoy a beautiful serene view of the
west coastof Mauritius whilst eating. Recommended
self catering beach bungalows in Mauritius:
I recently discovered, in Trou d'Eau Douce on the east coast of Mauritius , self-catering
beach bungalows in Mauritius called Cilaos, a family business run by Belall
and Sarah.
The complex is extremely clean, and much to my surprise very cheap,
starting at low season tariff of Rs 900.- (Mauritian Rupees) Euro 42,-*
a night for a studio to Rs 1,300.- a night for a duplex bungalow (ground floor)
2 bedrooms, bathroom, dining room and kitchen with balconies from the master bedroom
and living room permitting you to appreciate the sun rise whilst "breakfasting",
a totally breath taking experience! The east coast can get quite windy, in the
winter months, but a paradise for wind and kite surfers.

Ecological Tourism Portal:Ecological tourism, still in its
early years, is a new tourism sector for Mauritius. A new eco-tourism
portal is under development. Shopping:
Where most items are imported and are subject to high import taxes, the textile
industry provide you with cheap branded textiles, normally rejected for exports,
but still a bargain. Beware of textile branded imitations such as Ralph Lauren,
until December 2004, this sold under the banner of a "Factory Shop"
which were popping up like mushrooms all over the island . As of 1st january 2005
these articles are ONLY available "underground" at the major markets
in Port Louis and Quatre Bornes and in some cases under the counter of exclusive
textile shops.
If the police don't know where Ralph Lauren counterfeited textile
is still being sold, then you can be sure ALL taxi drivers in Mauritius do, because
they obtain a commission when they bring a tourist anywhere where money is spent.
Actually the best thing to do is to let the Taxi drivers show you the good shopping
spots, not buy anything that day, and then rent a car and do a days shopping which
will work out cheaper than the taxi earning up to 20, 30 or even 40% on your back
even if you have to rent a car for Rs 800
per day. It may be hard to take that line because they can be so charming when
money is round the corner!
